Parents with Prams

Redland Mayoral Candidate Councillor Karen Williams has promised to make life easier for parents and carers of Redlands babies by introducing a number of designated ‘parents with prams’ parking spaces close to the centre of Cleveland. Cr Williams said Cleveland’s shopping precinct was a popular place for mums and dads with toddlers but they often found it hard to get carparks close to destinations such as the Council Library, Art Gallery and Bloomfield and Middle Streets. “Parents and carers love taking kids to the library, the parks in the Cleveland CBD and shopping at the local businesses but many find parking close to these facilities difficult to find,” Cr Williams said. And as parents and carers know, it can be a logistical nightmare getting kids from ‘A to B’ and there’s nothing worse than when you get there you have to walk for miles with, kids, prams and other gear." Cr Williams said her policy will not only make access easier for parents with prams, but also encourage more families to come down and take advantage of what Cleveland CBD has to offer. The initiative builds on similar initiatives by private businesses in shopping centres and would initially be on a trial basis after consultation with the community and Cleveland businesses owners. Cr Williams said consultation would help determine the number of carparks set aside for those with prams and the times in which spaces would be for families only. “This is about encouraging families to enjoy Cleveland’s beautiful facilities and getting people back taking advantage of the many wonderful businesses we have in the centre of the Redlands.” Cr Williams has a long-standing track record of family and youth-friendly initiatives in the Redlands. Her support has facilitated such initiatives as Mentor One, Capalaba Youth Space, Capalaba Regional Park Development All Abilities Playground, and the regional Redlands Youth Plaza.
